Kootenays

The area along Highway 93 in British Columbia, south of the Trans-Canada Highway, offers a fantastic array of hiking and scrambling opportunities on all types of mountains high and low. There are giants like the mighty Mount Ball that takes a good 14 hours return to conquer, or the compact Vermilion Peak that’s mostly a hike and can be summited in 3 hours or less. Many of these routes are described in Kane’s “Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies”, but there is much room for exploration, especially further south along Hwy 93!
